Traditional Homeland of Wolastoqewiyik (Wolastoq Peoples) - Organizations and concerned community members from across New Brunswick have joined together to form the Stop Sisson Mine Coalition in opposition to the proposed Sisson tungsten and molybdenum mine.

In letters sent yesterday to Premier Susan Holt and all MLAs, the coalition called on the provincial government to halt the proposed mine project, which poses one of the largest environmental and public health risks ever proposed in New Brunswick. The letters cited risks related to public health, tailings management liabilities, questionable economic benefits, improper consultations as required under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples specifically “Free, Prior and Informed Consent”, and the potential burden future cleanup costs could place on taxpayers.

Northcliff Resources, the company behind the proposed mine, is headquartered outside New Brunswick and is majority owned by Todd Corporation, a private company controlled by the Todd family of New Zealand, one of the wealthiest business families in that country. Coalition members say profits are likely to leave the province, while New Brunswickers are left to carry the environmental and financial risks long after the executives and investors are gone.

Speaking about the mine, Wolastoqewi Grand Chief Ron Tremblay quoted his Osage Nation Relatives, "When the last tree has been cut down, the last fish caught, the last river poisoned, only then will we realize that one cannot eat money."

Stalled since 2018, the proposed mine was revived in 2025 when Northcliff Resources received funding from the US Department of War and the Government of Canada for an updated feasibility study, which is anticipated in mid-2026.

In November 2025, the Sisson project was referred to the Major Projects Office by Prime Minister Mark Carney, making it eligible for federal investment and off-take agreements, in which the government agrees to buy a set amount of the mineral for a set period at a fixed price, regardless of global prices. Premier Holt has been championing the mine for the past year, despite the meager promise of just $280 million in royalties over the 27-year lifespan of the mine.

The Coalition unites a wide variety of members, including physicians, environmentalists, faith communities, and engineers, all committed to a clean and sustainable future for New Brunswick.

About the Coalition:

The Stop Sisson Mine Coalition is focused on public education, community outreach, municipal engagement, and advocacy related to the proposed project. Planned activities include public information sessions, educational materials, outreach to elected officials, and opportunities for residents to become involved.
