Indigenous Legal History with Mi'gmawe'l Tplu'taqnn Treaty Education

About the presentation:

The Indigenous history and Legal history presentation explores the concepts of Indigenous Law and Aboriginal Laws, as well as Indigenous history in Canada, and their significance and impacts today. This presentation will look at the historical and legal background of Indigenous relationships with the British Crown, both, pre- and post-confederation.

The Federal government created assimilative policies specific to dealing with the Indigenous peoples of Canada. We will look at the areas, including the creation of the Indian Act, Indian Residential Schools, Indian Day Schools, the 60s Scoop and the effect these assimilative policies have had and continue to have today on Indigenous people across Canada.

About the organization:

Mi’gmawe’l Tplu’taqnn is a non-profit organization whose members are the nine Mi’gmaq communities in New Brunswick: Amlamgog (Fort Folly) First Nation, Natoaganeg (Eel Ground) First Nation, Elsipogtog First Nation (Big Cove), Oinpegitjoig (Pabineau) First Nation, Esgenoôpetitj (Burnt Church) First Nation, Tjipõgtõtjg (Buctouche) First Nation, L’nui Menikuk (Indian Island) First Nation, Ugpi’ganjig (Eel River Bar) First Nation and Metepenagiag Mi’kmaq Nation.

A L’nuey leadership body that protects our people by asserting and implementing our Inherent, Aboriginal and Treaty Rights throughout Mi’gma’gi. To live the Treaties through stewardship, leading to cultural, educational, economic and social well-being. To utilize our strength and resiliency as a people; planning for the future and remembering the past. To work, educate and build a meaningful, honourable and effective relationship with governments at all levels,including other L’nu’k nations, to achieve our goals.
