Freshwater mussels play an important role in our freshwater ecosystems by stabilizing the beds of streams, lakes and rivers. They filter water and provide food and habitat for other plants and animals. Habitat alteration, loss of fish species and the potential introduction of invasive, exotic zebra mussels pose major threats to the success of our freshwater mussels.
Please feel free to bring along dry, empty mussel shells that you have collected around the edge of freshwater streams, lakes, and rivers for identification.
Please note, spaces are extremely limited. If you register and are no longer able to attend, please let us know so that the space can be filled by someone else!
Cost: This workshop is FREE to attend; however, we will be accepting donations at the door that will go toward the Saint John Naturalists Club!
