Description:
Join us for an exciting and educational event, "The Shorebirds of Saints Rest: Talk & Walk," taking place on August 19, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Irving Nature Park in Saint John, NB.
Hosted by Hank Scarth from the Saint John Naturalists Club (Nature Saint John), this "Talk & Walk" event is perfect for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers eager to learn more about the diverse species of shorebirds found in the park. Identifying these unique creatures can be quite a challenge, but fear not, as Hank will share expert tips and insights on their identification, making the experience enriching for participants of all levels.
During the talk, Hank will take us on a captivating journey through the incredible migration story of the Semipalmated Sandpiper, one of the most common park visitors. Learn about the impressive 4,000 km non-stop flight these birds undertake to reach their wintering grounds in South America.
Following the informative talk, we'll embark on a guided visit to Saints Rest Beach to witness these magnificent shorebirds in their habitat. Don't miss the chance to see them and learn more about their behaviors and adaptations that enable them to thrive in their coastal environment.
The Talk and Walk will begin at the Information Kiosk on Taylors Island within the Irving Nature Park, starting at 1:00 PM sharp on Saturday, August 19. We extend a warm invitation to people of all ages to join us for this engaging event. It's completely free to attend!
This event serves as the kickoff for our Shorebird Conservation and Education Project, running from August 19th to September 17th (including Labour Day). As part of the project, we will be engaging with beach-goers, educating them about the vital importance of providing space for shorebirds to rest during high tide before their awe-inspiring non-stop journey to South America, spanning an incredible 4,000 km. Volunteers are needed!
The Shorebird Conservation and Education Project is made possible through a valuable partnership between the Saint John Naturalist Club, the Irving Nature Park, and Nature NB, with funding support from Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Mark your calendars for this not-to-be-missed event that promises an enlightening experience and a chance to contribute to the conservation of these incredible shorebirds. See you there!
