Introduction: Integrating climate change into forest management planning and climate-related risks

Speaker:

Dr. Anthony R. Taylor, RPF

Dr. Taylor is an Associate Professor of Forest Ecology and Management at the University of New Brunswick (UNB). He holds a BSc. in Environmental Science from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a MSc. and PhD. in Forest Ecology from Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Before joining UNB in 2021, Dr. Taylor worked for ten years as a Federal Research Scientist for Natural Resources Canada, studying the effects of climate change on Canada’s forests. Today, Dr. Taylor operates a large and productive research laboratory at UNB that focuses on ‘Climate-Focused Forest Management‘ — that is how forest management planning may be used to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Across Turtle Island, Indigenous communities face urgent housing challenges. In Canada alone, over 80,000 Indigenous homes need repairs, and more than 14,000 require full replacement. In the U.S., over 68,000 Native American homes are substandard, many never even inspected.

The climate crisis only continues to worsen and as a community we must demand bolder climate action from our leadership.

Tantramar and Mount Allison University should be doing a lot more to align our community to international and national climate goals.We deserve a green future and action is needed now to make that a possibility.

We aim to restate the unmet demands of the 2019 youth climate strikes and bring forth new calls for builing a green and livable future for Tantramar.

Megan is a forest ecologist and PhD Candidate at the University of New Brunswick (UNB). She holds a MScF in forest ecology from UNB, and a BSc in biology (minor in French) from Dalhousie University. Prior to joining Community Forests in 2015, Megan worked for over a decade with a range of organizations in the natural resources and conservation sectors in New Brunswick. As the Forest Program Director, Megan guides the applied research and development aspects of Community Forests’ work in natural climate solutions, with particular emphasis on climate-focused forest management.

Drought
Impacts of drought on tree health and growth and strategies to reduce vulnerability

Loïc is an associate professor of forest ecology at Laval University (Québec City, Canada). Prior to moving to Québec City, Loïc was professor at University of New Brunswick. His research program uses applied forest ecology to better inform climate-adapted forest management. He uses climate change experiments, high-precision monitoring of tree and large-scale analyses of tree growth data collections to assess climatic thresholds in the growth and health of northeastern tree species.

Our hike will conclude at a lookout spot from where you will be peering through our scopes and binoculars to spot seals in their natural habitat and haul out sites.
This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy a peaceful evening outdoors, take in breathtaking views and experience the marine life in our beloved Bay of Fundy.

Pests and diseases in the Wabanaki–Acadian forest and strategies to protect forest health

Sarah Weatherby

Sarah Weatherby is a formally trained horticulturist and forest technician, with a diploma from the Maritime College of Forest Technology (Ranger School) and a degree from Dalhousie University. She has over 15 years of experience in the natural resources sector, including work with the Department of Natural Resources. For 11 years, Sarah served as an instructor and college administrator at the Ranger School, sharing her expertise with the next generation of forest professionals. She is also the owner of a forest health consulting business specializing in supporting small woodlot owners in sustainable forest management.

Registration closes at 11 pm, September 30th.
