Stressful Cityscapes or Pockets of Paradise? How Forest Retention May Buffer the Impact of Urbanization on Salamanders

Urbanization is one of the greatest challenges facing our world’s wildlife. As New Brunswick’s urban centers continue to grow, it is important we understand how our growth impacts the wildlife we share our backyards with. MSc graduate Joshua Christiansen investigated the influence of urbanization on the behavioural and thermal ecology of the Eastern Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. In this talk, Joshua will discuss his findings on the influence, or lack thereof, of urbanization on this species’ behaviour and thermoregulation and what this means for amphibian conservation in our urban centers.

Sustainable Blue Economy Summit 2026

The Westin Nova Scotian

By ECO Canada, Ocean Alliance Canada, Future Skills Centre

Funded by the Government of Canada's Future Skills Program

The blue economy has entered a decisive phase. Opportunities are clear, but impact depends on execution. Capital is deployed effectively to fund solutions that scale, innovation grows beyond pilot projects into competitive sectors, policy enables sustainable ocean industries, and partnerships connect stakeholders to deliver real-world results.

The Sustainable Blue Economy Summit unites the systems that make growth happen: capital, policy, innovation, partnerships, and workforce development.

The Summit is structured around the core drivers required to turn ocean ambition into measurable results. Each area reflects how the global blue economy is moving from potential to performance.
