OCTOBER MONTHLY PRESENTATION
“The Hidden Lives of Bats”
Presenter:  Lucas Greville

Bats are the second largest group of mammals on Earth, comprising over 1,400 species that exhibit diverse form, behavior, and ecological roles. Yet their nocturnal nature makes them a mystery for many naturalists and nature enthusiasts. This talk will uncover the hidden lives of bats, introducing key aspects of their biology and natural history. We’ll explore how bats navigate and hunt in the dark, the incredible range of their diets and adaptations, and their ecological significance. Special attention will be given to the bats of New Brunswick, highlighting the species found in our region, their current conservation status, and the challenges they face from habitat loss, white nose syndrome, and wind turbines. Participants will leave with a new appreciation for these remarkable mammals, along with guidance on how to observe, support, and advocate for local bat populations. Whether you’re a lifelong naturalist or newly curious, this presentation will shed light on one of the most misunderstood and ecologically important groups in the animal kingdom.

AGM: Hike and preserve grand opening

New preserve in Long Settlement, Carleton County

By Nature Trust of New Brunswick

Location: New preserve in Long Settlement, Carleton County (official preserve name will be unveiled as part of the hike!)

Parking/Meeting Area: TBD

Description:
Following the business portion of our Annual General Meeting (AGM), please join us for a special social gathering and guided hike from 3:15-4:45 pm to celebrate the grand opening and official name unveiling of our new nature preserve in Long Settlement, Carleton County!

Help us celebrate a banner year for land conservation in New Brunswick, which saw the addition of beautiful new preserves in Appalachian Hardwood Forest, along the Wolastoq river valley, and other key habitats. With these additions, our network of protected lands has grown to 14,000 acres and counting!

Explore the ecologically rich land of our new preserve in Long Settlement, which provides essential habitat for many rare species, including white-rimmed shingle lichen, black ash, American lopseed, and Goldie’s woodfern. Towering canopy trees dominate the landscape, transforming the property into a vibrant spectacle of color each fall.

The official preserve name will be unveiled as part of the hike — don't miss out on this historic moment!
