As the new school year gathers momentum, take a purposeful pause to return to balance, recharge your energy, and find your direction.

The Sustainability Education Alliance invites you to gather for a fall educators' retreat on the shores of Nictau Lake beneath the beauty of Mount Carleton for connection, learning, and renewal. Explore the wisdom of the land through experiences shared by a variety of presenters and guides. Build confidence with bushcraft skills with Marc-André Caissie from Forêt Acadienne School of Bushcraft. Discover practical ways to bring land-based learning into your work with children, youth, and communities with Great Minds Think Outside and Learning Nature’s Way. Join Aaron Shantz from United Way Greater Moncton and be inspired to think differently about supporting at-risk youth—discovering creative ways to engage, build connections, and connect them with resources to thrive.

Music, nature journalling, and nature-inspired art will be woven throughout the retreat, inviting you to slow down, notice, create and experience the land in different ways. There will be opportunities to welcome the beauty of sunrise over Nictau Lake, and evenings spent around the campfire for storytelling and stargazing with knowledgeable guides beneath the night sky. As night settles, fall asleep to the call of the loon and the song of the barred owl.

Take time to breathe deeply and reconnect with what guides you. Leave with a new sense of direction - grounded, refreshed and inspired.

You will leave this retreat with:

  • A certificate of completion
  • A nature journal filled will ideas, reflections, and take-home activities
  • Practical resources and connections to support your work with children and youth
  • Greater confidence in bushcraft skills and outdoor experiences
  • Ideas and resources for incorporating outdoor and land-based learning into your work with young people

Marc-André Caissie
Marc-André Caissie

Founded by Marc-André Caissie, Forêt Acadienne School of Bushcraft was created to help people develop practical outdoor skills while fostering a deeper appreciation for the Acadian Forest. With over a decade of bushcraft experience, years as a searcher, and a background as both a high school and university instructor, Marc-André combines real-world experience with a passion for teaching.
His approach emphasizes hands-on learning in wilderness skills education, practical problem-solving, and building confidence in the outdoors. This makes his outdoor learning programs accessible to beginners while providing meaningful challenges for more experienced participants. Forêt Acadienne School of Bushcraft.

Aaron Shantz
Aaron Shantz
Strategic Coordinator, École Mgr-Marcel-François-Richard & You Turns Program Associate, United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeast NB

Aaron and his wife Shelley find hope in dedicating their time to initiatives focused on social justice, agroecology and food sovereignty. They have been raising their family of four on a once abandoned homestead in Sainte-Marie-de-Kent. They moved there from BC, 17 years ago. Shelley operates l’Hirondelle Farm produces fresh vegetables for food banks.
Aaron has been working over the last 7 school years with youth that face barriers in life that make it impossible to experience success at school. The Strategic Coordinator model has allowed him to build relationships with youth during school hours and engage them in activities and social enterprise projects outside of school to build trust so that he can effectively understand their needs.
This approach prevents kids from being alone in taking on barriers such as youth homelessness, hunger, human trafficking, parental neglect, eating disorders and mental illness. In a rural setting such as Kent County where resources for families and youth are extremely limited it requires an out of the box approach involving the community in supporting school staff as they take on challenges outside of the scope of the services a school should provide.
Aaron’s passion is to encourage kids to discover themselves and see the possibilities that exist outside their current reality!
