Wednesday, June 2, at 7:30pm, a biweekly Decolonizing Book Club is being launched, guided by Mi’kmaw educator Chris George. As Chris explains, “Fundamentally, decolonizing means building relationships and raising awareness. We need settler support, because the laws and structures that harm Indigenous peoples are put in place by a settler government. This is an opportunity to build those relationships and raise awareness.”

As naturalists and bird watchers we are always “out in nature” looking for birds, plants, insects and many other things. But do we always know if what we are studying is native to our region or introduced? And if introduced, what effect does it have on our native species? The presentation for our first meeting of the 2021/22 Nature Moncton season on September 21st will focus on these questions. The New Brunswick Invasive Species Council (NBISC) is a collaborative organization that works to protect our province’s environment, economy, and recreational interests from the threat of invasive species. This presentation will provide an overview of invasive species ecology and impacts, particular species of concern in the province, how to ID them and what steps you can take to prevent their introduction and spread. Whether you are a birder, hiker, gardener, camper, boater, or simply enjoy walking with your dog, everyone has a role to play!

NATURE MONCTON FEBRUARY MEETING
Tuesday, February 15th, 2022 at 7:00 pm
Virtual Meeting
“New Brunswick’s Newest Avian Immigrant: The Wild Turkey”
Presenter: Jim Wilson
Never in our history has a new bird discovered our province on foot – until now. Slowly and quietly during the past two decades, hundreds of Wild Turkeys eluded border officials and slipped into New Brunswick from Maine, where a vibrant population of the birds is firmly established in all 16 counties. But how does a bird of this size, a species that was never here historically, cope with finding food in deep winter snow and cold, compete with native bird species and evade potential new predators? Well, Wild Turkeys are doing just that, and quite successfully. Our Wild Turkeys now number in the thousands. This talk will explain how they do it.
