NNE: A Practical Guide for Teachers: Using Narrative and Visual Tools to Learn about Environmental, Health, and Community Challenges (2) It’s time to ramp up the environmental learning! The Sustainability Education Alliance (a collaborative of the New Brunswick Environmental Network) is hosting a free bilingual virtual learning series called “Nurturing Nature in Education.” The series will take place between February 11th and March 26th. These workshops are geared towards K-12 teachers across New Brunswick and they are either English, French, or Bilingual. In some cases, co-learning with the students is encouraged! Topics include climate change adaptation, Two-Eyed Seeing, forest health and herbicide spraying, eco-anxiety, sustainable development goals, and more.

Event Description:

This presentation presents a guide developed from the results of workshops held in schools, to raise students' awareness of current environmental, social, and health challenges using visual and narrative tools. The major challenges we face today—such as climate change, biodiversity loss, natural resource scarcity, food insecurity, and urban poverty—are the result of the cumulative impacts of individual actions that are often perceived as insignificant, but have global repercussions.

To better understand these challenges, it is essential to adopt an interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral, and participatory approach, incorporating intergenerational learning. This guide proposes the use of appropriate methods and tools to educate and raise awareness among young people, without overburdening them. Quoting Jacques Cousteau, who said “we protect what we love, and we love what we know,” the author emphasizes that to protect the planet, it is crucial to understand its past and its history in order to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.

Young people need to understand that their voices and actions are powerful in preserving our planet. It's also essential that they see the links between development, environment, governance, health, and communities, so that they become aware of their role in building a sustainable future.

Schedule of Workshops:

*Note: The 10:30am–11:30am time slots are participatory with students because they are during class time.
