Deadline for comments on proposed Single-Use Plastics Prohibition Regulations

The proposed Single-Use Plastics Prohibition Regulations, were published in the Canada Gazette, Part I on December 25, 2021, and are open for a 70-day public comment period ending on March 5, 2022.

The comments received during this period will be considered when developing the final regulations.

Background

Plastic is an important material used in all sectors of our economy and delivers benefits to Canadians.

In October 2020, the Government of Canada released a Science assessment of plastic pollution. The Science assessment finds that plastic is polluting our rivers, lakes, and oceans, harming wildlife, and generating microplastics in the water we use and drink. It also recommends the Government pursue actions to reduce the amounts of macroplastics and microplastics that end up in the environment, in accordance with the precautionary principle.

Canadians expect the Government to take action to protect the environment and to reduce plastic pollution across the country. The proposed Regulations represent the Government’s next step in addressing plastic pollution.

Key elements of the proposed regulations

The proposed Regulations target the following categories of single-use plastic manufactured items:

• checkout bags
• cutlery
• foodservice ware made from or containing problematic plastics
• ring carriers
• stir sticks
• straws
