Nature Miramichi Monthly Meeting
By Nature Miramichi
FEBRUARY 3: Willow English (via Zoom) – North American Breeding Bird Survey
Please join us on February 3 when Willow English will present on the North American Breeding Bird Survey. Willow is the National Coordinator of the North American Breeding Bird Survey, Canadian Wildlife Service.
Understanding how bird population numbers are changing is fundamental to management and conservation. Citizen Science programs, which rely on participation by members of the public, help survey birds at a wider scale and with more data than relying only on professional biologists. The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is one of North America’s most important bird surveys, and heavily relies on public participation.
In this talk, Willow will give an overview of how Canada’s birds are faring and discuss several different Citizen Science programs for surveying birds with an emphasis on the BBS. She will also share information on participating in the BBS, and how the data collected by observers are used. This will include the State of Canada’s Birds, a new website that is a definitive source information for all bird species in Canada.
