Muntaka Siddique Muntaka is a second-gen immigrant from Bangladesh, currently living uninvited on the traditional unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik. She holds an Honours BSc in Life Sciences from McMaster University and works as a Climate Services assistant with CLIMAtlantic, supporting the Climate Adaptation and Resilience Training (CART) program. She is passionate about community engagement, science communication, and environmental change through the lens of health and equity. She values life-long learning, dismantling systemic oppression, and working towards creating a resilient and equitable place for all. |

Marion Ojo Abegunde Marion is a second year Kinesiology Science student at the University of New Brunswick Fredericton. She has been a member of YEAN since grade 11 and has enjoyed working alongside other youth to make a difference in the environmental movement. YEAN has presented many incredible opportunities and experiences that she is grateful for, such as developing a Climate Adaptation presentation to better inform students on how to take action and minimize the impacts of climate change within their communities. She hopes to tackle the barriers that may prevent youth from having the tools and means to engage in environmental action. In her free time, Marion enjoys volunteering, cooking, and watching period dramas. |

Crow Tardif Hi, my name is Crow! I joined YEAN because I felt the need to do something to make the world better and I didn't know where to start. I've been on the committee since the summer of 2025, and I think it was a pretty good decision. A lot (if not all) of my interests relate back to art in some way, and I love making many different types of art! Coding, drawing, and recycled crafts are a few examples. Loving nature is a guarantee for me, considering I grew up walking in the woods since I could stand. I love all the different ways you can experience the environment around you, such as the smells, the strong winds, and the various different types of weather, being in nature is genuinely just a wonderful thing and I hope to help recover as much that we've lost as we can. |

Leona Fursova Leona is a third-year Bachelor of Science student in Environmental Management at the University of New Brunswick Fredericton. Originally from Toronto, she returns each summer to work and volunteer in environmental education and outreach. In her previous role, she has contributed to the making of a community pollinator garden while facilitating hands-on educational workshops. Leona is passionate about environmental advocacy and believes environmental education reshapes how we see the natural world and, in turn, how we protect it. Because of her deep love for nature, she hopes to dedicate her future to learning from and caring for the Earth. Her passions include mycology, gardening, hiking, pottery, and botanical illustrations! |

Growing Resilience: Mitigating Eco-Anxiety Through 2SLGBTQIA+ Youth-led Gardening and Biodiversity Projects is for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth between the ages of 16-26 in the Greater Saint John region who are interested in gardening, local food, and identifying ways they can address climate change in their communities.
Over 8 months, youth will participate in 7 workshops to learn how to start, grow, harvest, and cook their own food produced locally in community garden plots. Participants will be able to take home and eat any of the food that they produce! Additionally, they will partake in a Photovoice project where they will identify the things in their communities that they see as issues and assets to address climate change. A final celebration event will take place in Saint John where we can share the story of the program by displaying the results of the Photovoice sessions completed by the youth for the public, friends, and family to view.
20 2SLGBTQIA+ youths from the Saint John region will be accepted for this program and will be compensated for their participation with an honorarium! Email [email protected] to fill out a short application. Applications are now due by April 12th, 2024.
This program is occurring in partnership with ACAP Saint John, Chroma NB, Wisdom2Action, and the New Brunswick Environmental Network (NBEN), and is funded by Ecclesiastical Insurance and the Government of New Brunswick.
Eligibility:
- Youth between the ages of 16-26
- Identify as 2SLGBTQIA+
- Live in the Greater Saint John Region
- Available to meet in person several times between April-November 2024*
- Access to wifi and a device with the capacity to connect to Zoom for 1-2 virtual Photovoice sessions
*Must be able to commit to attending all scheduled group workshops (listed below). A volunteer schedule for maintaining the gardens throughout the spring and summer will be created to accommodate your availability. Funds to aid with transportation to and from the community gardens and/or workshops will be provided.
Rough Schedule:

- April / May: Soil Quality Testing and Seed-starting workshop
- May: Planting in the ground
- June: Urban Edible Foods
- August: Cooking workshop
- September: Seed collecting
- October/November: Final Photovoice Session and Celebration
- TBD: Gleaning Field trip
- Ongoing throughout the program: Harvesting, Maintaining, Weeding, and Watering in the garden plots
- May-October: 1-2 virtual follow-up Photovoice sessions

Inspired by the global youth climate movement, young people in New Brunswick have started mobilizing for action on climate change. In April 2019, the NBEN hosted an initial meeting with youth across the province to explore the idea of working together on the climate crisis. The YEAN has had various iterations over the years including the Youth Environmental Action Network (YEAN) and the Youth Action Group (YAG). The NBEN brings youth environmental groups together through its collaborative approach.
