Salary Range: $40,000-$50,000 annually 

Position Summary: 

Eastern Charlotte Waterways, located in Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick, is a not for profit environmental organization featuring an ISO 17025 accredited microbiology laboratory. The organization is currently seeking a Laboratory/Quality Control Coordinator to assist the Laboratory Manager in the analysis of water samples for coliform bacteria. In addition, the  successful candidate will participate in business development activities focused around the planning and progress of the laboratory expansion here at Eastern Charlotte Waterways. This position is full time permanent and can start immediately.  


  • Conduct A1 Direct Medium method of fecal coliform analysis of seawater (35%):
    • Production of media for fecal coliform analysis of seawater.
    • Determining water quality characteristics (pH, salinity)
    • Managing and maintaining stock and working cultures. 
    • Ensure proper sterilization of contaminated media and materials. 
    • Inoculate A1 media tubes, following FCA method and aseptic technique, as well  as reading and reporting results.  

  • Conduct MPN coliform analysis of drinking water samples via Colilert method (20%):
    • Travel locally to collect and/or receive water samples from residents and  businesses.
    • Take payments and maintain records related to testing and associated payments.
    • Reporting of results to customers and assisting to identifying next steps/solutions.
    • Ensure proper destruction and/or sterilization of testing materials.
    • Perform testing via Colilert method as well as reading and reporting results. 

  • Performing all QA/QC procedures at varying frequencies (daily, weekly, etc) (35%):
    • Ensure all documentation, systems and equipment comply with ISO/IEC  17025:2005 standard.
    • Creation of non-conformance reports and conducting related investigations, and  identifying preventative actions. 
    • Liaise with third-party laboratories to achieve additional testing externally.  

  • Assisting other ECW staff with internal or external research projects (5%): 
    • Provide laboratory testing services to support research projects. 
    • Assist ECW in field work activities throughout various waterways in the region.
    • Carry out all activities safely, in accordance with the ECWL Safety Manual 

  • Other duties as required (5%): 
    • Participate in business development activities related to laboratory expansion  planning, identifying necessities for success (staff, methods, equipment).
    • Define areas of improvement in current and future testing capabilities.
    • Carry out various duties of the Laboratory Manager’s in his/her absence. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • B. Sc., Laboratory/Environmental Technologist diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience performing analytical testing for bacteria using aseptic technique.
  • Experience working with and maintaining bacterial cultures, media or agar.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control procedures in a laboratory setting.
  • Data management and experience with record-keeping (electronic and/or paper).
  • Experience with the use, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
  • Experience maintaining ISO 17025 standards and procedures including internal and external audit. 
  • Able to work flexible hours (some activities may be weather and/or tide-dependent).
  • Able to act impartially with ability to ensure the confidence of testing and procedures.
  • Field work and/or boating experience is considered an asset.  
  • Must hold a valid drivers license.  


  • The position is a full time, permanent position.  
  • The position is based at ECW’s office, 881 Main Street, Blacks Harbour.
  • Salary Range: $40,000-$50,000 annually 
  • Work will take place from Mon.- Fri. (37.5 hours) 
  • Flexibility will be required in the timing of the daily work schedule.
