Webinar: Moving Towards a Decarbonized Electricity Grid

Join the Conservation Council of New Brunswick’s webinar on Canada’s pathway to a decarbonized electricity grid, happening Dec. 1, 2021 at 1 p.m.

This webinar features two speakers from the Pembina Institute who will share results of two of their most recent studies on coal phase-out and affordable and reliable fossil fuel replacement options.

Binnu Jeyakumar
Binnu is the Director of Clean Energy at the Pembina Institute, Canada’s leading energy think tank. Her portfolio includes managing the phase-out of coal power, integrating renewables, and modernizing the grid. She has expertise in fossil fuel and renewable generation technologies, community energy, sustainability strategy development. She has designed and convened several multi-stakeholder engagements on energy policy issues. Before joining the Pembina Institute, Binnu worked as a plant and performance engineer at TransAlta’s generating facilities in Alberta, Ontario, and Mexico. She also provided management consulting services to the Ghanaian government focusing on local government effectiveness.

Binnu will discuss Pembina’s Coal to Clean – Canada’s progress toward phasing out coal power report: From Coal to Clean focuses on Canada’s progress in phasing out coal. This follows the trajectory of coal from the pioneering Ontario coal phase-out completed in 2014 and progress towards the 2030 phase-outs in the rest of Canada, including Alberta’s dramatic acceleration that results in coal power eliminated by the end of 2023. This presentation examines the phase-out in the context of Canada’s 2035 net-zero grid commitment and focuses on what governments like New Brunswick can do to follow through.

Jan Gorski
Jan Gorski is a senior analyst at the Pembina Institute working on climate and energy issues across Canada. He leads the methane policy file across Canada and has experience working with governments, industry, and other stakeholders on a variety of issues including oil and gas, carbon pricing, and renewables. Prior to Pembina, Jan was a project engineer for Clearstone Engineering in which he lead domestic and international emissions measurement and reduction studies in the oil and gas sector. Jan holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, both from Carleton University.

Jan will present on the economics of clean energy portfolios in Atlantic Canada: Canada is in the process of completing a nationwide phase-out of coal-fired power by the end of 2029 and creating a net-zero grid by 2035, while meeting new demand as homes and vehicles continue to electrify. A key question facing decision-makers is can clean energy solutions deliver reliable electricity supply in an affordable manner? The report compares the economics of clean energy portfolios consisting of solar, wind, battery storage, energy efficiency, demand response, and hydro imports that can provide the same reliable electricity as a new gas plant or small modular reactor in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
