Global Perspectives, Local Well-being: Collaborative Approaches for Children's Health and Education
The Sustainability Education Alliance (SEA) and the Children’s Environmental Health Collaborative (CEH) are joining forces to put on their annual conference in 2024. This conference will explore the connections between Sustainability Education and Children’s Health, and how we can work together to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will be taking place on February 7th and 8th at the New Maryland Center in New Maryland, NB.

Lisa Perley-Dutcher
Lisa Perley-Dutcher a Wolastoqi ehpit (Maliseet woman) from the Neqotkuk/Tobique First Nation. Her family roots are from the Kahkakuhsuwakutom (Crow Clan). Lisa worked as a registered nurse for 30 plus years mainly with First Nations Community Health. She has a master’s degree in nursing from the University of New Brunswick. She established the first Aboriginal Nursing Initiative Director position at UNB Faculty of Nursing to help increase the recruitment and retention of Indigenous students. She also worked as the Director of Mental Wellness for the Atlantic Regions First Nation and Inuit Health Branch. She served as President of the Indigenous Nurses Association of Canada. Lisa and her husband Stephen are partner consultants (Mah-sos Education and Research Associates- MERA) providing on-line educational sessions, facilitation and research services on various topics related to Indigenous history and health. She graduated from a two-year intensive Wolastoqey language program and is the founder and Director of Kehkimin Inc. the first Wolastoqey Immersion and Land Based School.Lisa Perley-Dutcher est une Wolastoqi ehpit (femme malécite) de la Première nation Neqotkuk/Tobique. Sa famille est issue du Kahkakuhsuwakutom (clan Crow). Lisa a travaillé comme infirmière diplômée pendant plus de 30 ans, principalement dans le domaine de la santé communautaire des Premières nations. Elle est titulaire d'une maîtrise en soins infirmiers de l'université du Nouveau-Brunswick. Elle a créé le premier poste de directrice de l'initiative de soins infirmiers pour les autochtones à la faculté de soins infirmiers de l'UNB afin d'aider à accroître le recrutement et la rétention des étudiants autochtones. Elle a également travaillé comme directrice du bien-être mental pour la Direction générale de la santé des Premières nations et des Inuits des régions de l'Atlantique. Elle a été présidente de l'Indigenous Nurses Association of Canada. Lisa et son mari Stephen sont des consultants partenaires (Mah-sos Education and Research Associates - MERA) qui proposent des sessions éducatives en ligne, des services d'animation et de recherche sur divers sujets liés à l'histoire et à la santé des populations autochtones. Wolastoqewi Kci-Sakom spasaqsit possesom Ron Tremblay
Ron Tremblay is his birth name but his traditional name is “spasaqsit possesom” – morningstar burning. He is a citizen of Wolastoq Nation. Being the youngest of 10 children, Ron grew-up surrounded by the Wolastoqey language spoken fluently. Ron credits his mother and grandparents for his genuine love of the language and he also acknowledges that they provided him the true teachings of life. After moving to Fredericton in 1991 he befriended several Elders from local communities. The Elders guided him deeper into his Wolastoqey traditional ways. After years of involvement in various ceremonies he gained wisdom and knowledge of the “Wolastoqey way of life”. Still today, Ron practises the traditional ways of his people. In November of 2016, Ron was installed as Traditional Wolastoq Grand Chief. The mandate of the Wolastoq Grand Council is to protect and preserve their non-ceded traditional homeland and waterways.Ron Tremblay est son nom de naissance, mais son nom traditionnel est "spasaqsit possesom" - la brûlure de l'étoile du matin. Il est citoyen de la nation Wolastoq. Étant le plus jeune d'une famille de 10 enfants, Ron a grandi entouré de la langue Wolastoqey, qu'il parle couramment. Ron attribue à sa mère et à ses grands-parents l'amour sincère qu'il éprouve pour cette langue et reconnaît qu'ils lui ont transmis les véritables enseignements de la vie. Après avoir déménagé à Fredericton en 1991, il s'est lié d'amitié avec plusieurs aînés des communautés locales. Ceux-ci l'ont guidé plus profondément dans ses traditions wolastoqey. En novembre 2016, Ron a été installé en tant que grand chef traditionnel de Wolastoq. Le mandat du Grand Conseil de Wolastoq est de protéger et de préserver leur territoire traditionnel non cédé et leurs voies navigables.
Dr. Philip John Landrigan
Dr. Philip John Landrigan is an American epidemiologist and pediatrician. He has campaigned against substances in the environment that are harmful to children, such as lead and asbestos and has participated in the World Health Organization's global campaign to eradicate smallpox. He is also concerned with environmental pesticides. He has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal of the US Public Health Service and is a frequent consultant to the World Health Organization, which called Landrigan's work "instrumental in passing the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996’’. His work has been recognized by national non-profit organization Healthy Child Healthy World (Lifetime Achievement Award) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Child Health Champion Award). He is the author of several books and has published over 500 scientific papers. He was formerly the Director of the Children's Environmental Health Center and the Ethel Wise Professor and Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. In 2018, he became the founding director of Boston College's Global Public Health Program and the Global Pollution Observatory within the Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and Society.Le Dr Philip John Landrigan est un épidémiologiste et pédiatre américain. Serge LaRochelle
Serge LaRochelle works as the Environment and Sustainable Development Manager for the Rural Community of BEAUSOLEIL. Serge received a Masters of Natural Resources Management from the University of Manitoba and completed a Bachelor of Commercial Sciences degree from the University of Ottawa.Serge LaRochelle est un Gestionnaire environnement et développement durable du Communauté rurale de BEAUSOLEIL. Il a complété une maitrise en gestion des ressources naturelles à l’Université du Manitoba et un bac en administration des affaires à l’Université d’Ottawa.
Julie Cyr
Like most people, Julie's journey in education truly began with the birth of her three children when she was drawn to alternative forms of education and practiced Waldorf-inspired homeschooling. In subsequent years, she became a certified Forest School practitioner, earned a Masters in Education from Trent University in Critical Issues, and was an Outdoor Learning Instructional Coach in her school district. Currently, Julie is a middle school classroom teacher, a part-time Brilliant Labs Natural Maker Specialist, and a second-year doctoral student in Educational Leadership at Western University. Julie resides in Quispamsis, NB with her three children and dog, Barkley.Comme la plupart des gens, le parcours de Julie dans le domaine de l'éducation a véritablement commencé avec la naissance de ses trois enfants, lorsqu'elle a été attirée par des formes alternatives d'éducation et a pratiqué l'école à la maison inspirée de Waldorf. Par la suite, elle est devenue praticienne certifiée de l'école forestière, a obtenu un master en éducation de l'université de Trent sur les questions critiques et a été coach pédagogique en matière d'apprentissage en plein air dans son district scolaire. Actuellement, Julie est enseignante dans une classe de collège, spécialiste à temps partiel de Brilliant Labs Natural Maker, et étudiante en deuxième année de doctorat en leadership éducatif à l'Université Western. Mike Kofahl
Mike Kofahl (BA, MA, JD) is a staff lawyer at East Coast Environmental Law who lives and works in Unama’ki (Cape Breton, NS). He has certificates of specialization in environmental law and marine law from the Marine and Environmental Law Institute at Dalhousie University’s Schulich School of Law. His practice is largely focused on ocean and coastal issues, including coastal protection and access, wetlands, marine protected areas, shipping, fisheries, and aquaculture. He also works in areas like environmental and impact assessment, regional assessment, environmental rights and restorative justice.Mike Kofahl (BA, MA, JD) est un avocat salarié de East Coast Environmental Law qui vit et travaille à Unama'ki (Cape Breton, Nouvelle-Écosse). Rachel Robichaud
A teacher with a passion for nature and education since 2006, Rachel has taught for most of her career at Caraquet's Polyvalente Louis-Mailloux. Currently a provincial education officer for the environment and climate change file at the NB Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, her main objective is to equip and fund school communities to actively participate in environmental and climate action. She also aims to integrate environmental education into new curricula throughout the school career of New Brunswick students.Enseignante passionnée par la nature et l'éducation depuis 2006, Rachel a enseigné la majeure partie de sa carrière à la Polyvalente Louis-Mailloux de Caraquet. Actuellement agente pédagogique provinciale au dossier d'environnement et changements climatiques au ministère de l'Éducation et du Développement de la petite enfance du NB, son objectif principal est d'outiller et de financer les communautés scolaires pour qu'elles participent activement à l'engagement environnemental et climatique. Elle aspire également à intégrer l'éducation relative à l'environnement aux nouveaux programmes d'études et ce, tout au long du parcours scolaire des élèves du Nouveau-Brunswick.
Krysta Cowling
With more than 15 years of experience in the nonprofit sector Krysta launched Adaptly, a consulting and management firm that helps organizations achieve their mission. Krysta is currently the President of the New Brunswick Coalition for Pay Equity, which was recently honoured with the Lieutenant-Governor Dialogue Award for their collaborative work in fighting for pay equity legislation and just working conditions for New Brunswick workers. As past Executive Director of La Bikery Co-operative Krysta has won several awards for her community work including a Parks Canada NB Award for Sustainable Tourism and a YWCA Women of Distinction Award. She brings a collaborative approach to the projects she works on focusing on environmental and social impact.Avec plus de 15 ans d'expérience dans le secteur à but non lucratif, Krysta a lancé Adaptly, une société de conseil et de gestion qui aide les organisations à réaliser leur mission. Krysta est actuellement présidente de la Coalition pour l'équité salariale du Nouveau-Brunswick, qui a récemment reçu le prix Dialogue du lieutenant-gouverneur pour son travail de collaboration dans la lutte pour une loi sur l'équité salariale et des conditions de travail équitables pour les travailleurs du Nouveau-Brunswick. En tant qu'ancienne directrice générale de La Bikery Co-operative, Krysta a reçu plusieurs prix pour son travail communautaire, notamment un prix Parcs Canada NB pour le tourisme durable et un prix Femmes de mérite du YWCA.
