Wednesday, June 2, at 7:30pm, a biweekly Decolonizing Book Club is being launched, guided by Mi’kmaw educator Chris George. As Chris explains, “Fundamentally, decolonizing means building relationships and raising awareness. We need settler support, because the laws and structures that harm Indigenous peoples are put in place by a settler government. This is an opportunity to build those relationships and raise awareness.”

SSNB's Media Event (report card to elected political parties in the 60th Legislature) will be rescheduled until late August/Early September (Before the Committee on Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability reconvenes).

The media conference will be broadcast live on SSNB’s public Facebook group and we plan to send out a Zoom invite link for media to join on Thursday morning. At the media conference, SSNB will issue a report card for the performance of the four political parties that were elected to the 60th NB Legislature in 2020, in response to a petition with 35,000 hand-written signatures to ban herbicide spraying on public land (crown forests, NB Power right of ways). SSNB will also report on progress of the SSNB  pledge campaign, during which political candidates are asked to sign a pledge form to #StopSprayingNB.

At the media conference, SSNB will issue a report card for the performance of the four political parties that were elected to the 59th NB Legislature in 2020. Three of the elected parties had promised action on the #StopSprayingNB issue during the election campaign. In addition to our issue being an important election issue just as it was in 2018, we need to remind everyone that SSNB has had the largest petition in NB history with 35,000 hand-written signatures to ban herbicide spraying on public land (crown forests, NB Power right of ways).

As naturalists and bird watchers we are always “out in nature” looking for birds, plants, insects and many other things. But do we always know if what we are studying is native to our region or introduced?  And if introduced, what effect does it have on our native species?  The presentation for our first meeting of the 2021/22 Nature Moncton season on September 21st will focus on these questions.  The New Brunswick Invasive Species Council (NBISC) is a collaborative organization that works to protect our province’s environment, economy, and recreational interests from the threat of invasive species. This presentation will provide an overview of invasive species ecology and impacts, particular species of concern in the province, how to ID them and what steps you can take to prevent their introduction and spread. Whether you are a birder, hiker, gardener, camper, boater, or simply enjoy walking with your dog, everyone has a role to play!
