Indigenous Tree and shrub propagation with Gary Schneider

Indigenous Tree and shrub propagation with Gary Schneider

Join us March 12th for an informative propagation workshop right from your home or office! During the two hour workshop we will teach you the tips and tricks to propagating some of our native tree, shrub and wildflower species.

The workshop will begin with an informative talk, discussion, and demonstrations about several tree and shrub propagation techniques. It will be followed by a question and discussion session.

In this hands-on workshop led by Gary Schneider from Macphail Woods, participants will learn to collect and propagate cuttings from native shrubs, seed collection and propagationaswell as transplanting from the wild.

This webinar is tailored for restoration specialists, nursery managers, landowners, gardeners and silviculturists.

This event is funded in part by NRCan's 2 Billion Trees Program.

This webinar will be held in English with live interpretation available in French.

Quick Facts:

Although they vary considerably in technique, all vegetative propagation methods are a form of asexual reproduction. The objective is to make multiple "copies" or clones of an individual plant. Species that root easily can be propagated with rooted cuttings .This process involves collecting stem or root sections, treating the lower part with rooting hormones (if necessary), and then inserting into a growing medium until they form roots. Not all trees and shrubs can be propagated this way.

Gary Schneider

Gary Schneider co-founded the education and advocacy organization the Environmental Coalition of P.E.I. (ECO-PEI), and in 1991 started the Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project, dedicated to the restoration and propagation of the province'snative flora.

For over 36 years, the mission of Macphail Woods has been to restore the Island's endangered native forest habitats. Through advocacy and example, Gary has made forest restoration a provincial priority, with the P.E.I. government renewing in 2017 the 10-year public-land agreement with ECO-PEI. Over 800 hectares of public-forest land will be restored under the agreement. Along with running educational tours and workshops, Gary developed a forestry ecology field course for the University of Prince Edward Island, which is now also available at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. Gary has been recognized for his innovative approach on many occasions, but most recently received the 2022 Order of Prince Edward Island and the 2020 Nature Inspiration Award from the Canadian Museum of Nature.
