Canadian Environmental Assessment, Public Consultation, 2016-2017
On June 20, 2016, the Government of Canada launched a review of environmental and regulatory processes. On September 19, 2016, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada appointed an expert panel to conduct a comprehensive review of Canada’s environmental assessment processes.
October 11th and 12th, 2016, the governement held meetings and presentations with Indigenous groups and the public. The Expert Panel accepted written suggestions on the review until December 2016. Prior to this, the government had developed a questionnaire to help inform the review, which was open until August 31, 2016.
On June 1, 2017, the Government of Canda released a discussion paper outlining its proposed approach to environmental and regulatory processes. Canadians were invited to read the discussion paper and share their views until August 28th, 2017. The discussion paper is available down below
In 2017, the Expert Panel released its report, Building Common Ground: A New Vision for Impact Assessment in Canada. They accepted comments until May 5, 2017. The report is available below.

On August 28, 2019, the Impact Assessment Act, the Canadian Energy Regulator Act, and the Navigation Protection Act came into force. The Impact Assessment Act creates the new Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and repeals the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012.
