Sisson Brook Mine, Public Consultation, December 2008 - present
The Sisson Partnership is proposing to develop an open pit tungsten and molybdenum mine located approximately 60 kilometers northwest of Fredericton, New Brunswick. It is expected that the mine will be in operation for an estimated 27 years. The Sisson Mine proposal was subject to provincial and federal EIA processes.
In March 2018, Sisson Mine Ltd. applied for permission to dump toxic wastewater into two creeks in the Nashwaak watershed. In spring and fall 2018, nine consultation sessions took place about these proposed amendments to the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations, which would allow the use of portions of two creeks for the disposal of mine tailings from the project. A summary of the comments received can be found here. On March 15, 2018, Environment and Climate Change Canada hosted a public consultation in Stanley. Following these consultations, the proposed amendments were published in the Canada Gazette, Part I, on February 16, 2019 for a 30-day comment period. For more information about the consultation, click here. On June 25, 2019, cabinet approved the proposed amendments, allowing the use of the two streams for the disposal of mine tailings.

On April 15, 2016, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency invited the public to comment on the Comprehensive Study Report for the project. The Comprehensive Study Report included the Agency's conclusions and recommendations regarding the implementation of mitigation measures and whether the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. Written comments needed to be submitted by May 15, 2016.
On December 3, 2015, the provincial government issued an environmental impact assessment (EIA) approval for the project. The approval is subject to 40 conditions to protect the environment. Click here for more information on the provincial EIA process.
Northcliff submitted its revised EIS on May 21, 2014.
In January 2014, the New Brunswick Provincial Government Technical Review Committee's (TRC) comments on the Environmental Study Report submitted by Northcliff to the Canadian Environmental Assesssement Agency (CEAA) in September 2013 were released following a Right to Information Request.
On October 2, 2013, CCNB Action submitted a letter asking for the termination of the current public review period for the project. Over the course of the CCNB review by numerous experts, they concluded that the Assessment report is not complete and therefore must be returned to the proponent for additional information. They issued a media release of the same on October 10, 2013, and submitted their comments on October 14, 2013. For more information, see CCNB Action's website.
Northcliff Resources Ltd. announced on August 1, 2013 that the Environmental Impact Assessment Report for the Sisson Tungsten-Molybdenum Project located in central New Brunswick was completed.
