Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity, agreement under the Convention on Biological Diversity, September 2011
The Government of Canada sought the views of Canadian Stakeholders regarding its potential signature of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
On October 29, 2010 the text of the Protocol was adopted by the 193 countries that are Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, including Canada. The Government of Canada considered whether to sign this international treaty, choosing not to do so in the end. The deadline for countries to sign the Protocol was February 1, 2012. Signature indicated the intent to consider ratification at a later date.
Stakeholders were engaged in discussions on Access and Benefit Sharing over several years, to advise on both the international negotiations and on related domestic approaches.
The deadline to send views on the Nagoya Protocol was October 21, 2011.
